Study Abroad in Guatemala

The ACE 199 CAB class went to Guatemala for ten days in January 2010. The students visited Guatemala to experience the culture and gather information to create a sustainable SoyCow Table-top Soybean Processing Technology System.

The first place visited was the Fundaninas orphange in Guatemala City, founded in 1990.

The second place visted was the Centro de Artes y Officino (Industrial School Training Center), a trade school. The production of soy milk at this facility is discussed.

One of the last steps of the process is to "squeeze" the last of the soymilk out of the okara. It can be used in baked goods or as a meat extender.

The soy milk produced at Centro de Artes is packaged in one liter plastic bottles. They hope to commercially sell this product.

The third place visited was the Associacion Obra Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro, a hospital sponsored by the church to care for the poor in Guatemala.

The visit is appreciated by both the group and the SoyCow operator.
