Alex Duke believes his degree from the University of Illinois College of ACES in consumer economics and finance not only helped him land his job, but also achieve a promotion within 10 months of starting at Allstate Insurances Company in Northbrook.

“My U of I experience prepared me for my current job by teaching me financial modeling and understanding, enhancing my computer skills and ability to work within teams, and sharpening my communication skills,” he said.

As a senior financial analyst, Alex partners with the company’s product operations team to help them understand how the business is performing financially.  He also works with the claims department to help them grasp how their work is influencing the business units’ profitability.

“I really enjoy the flexibility and creativity within my department to create my own analyses and reports and present my findings to senior leadership,” he said.

Alex said his job requires a strong understanding of numbers, Microsoft Office, and good communication through writing, creating presentations, and mastering the ability to confidently communicate with company leaders.

“I would drill home to students in the consumer economics and finance program looking for careers in finance to really enhance their Microsoft Excel skills through the excellent courses offered in College of ACES,” he said.
