Dan Riewerts
My degree from U of I provided me with a unique knowledge base that could be applied universally across the business world, or specifically to the agricultural industry. As my professors in ACE told me, it’s easier to put an ag guy on Wall Street than to put a Wall Street guy on a farm.

Dan Riewerts is a man who loves his job. “I enjoy the excitement and challenges that come with new investment opportunities,” said Riewerts, a senior associate in Natural Resources and Infrastructure Investments with Global Private Markets at Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association – College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF).

“Every deal is a little different. It’s fun to be working on an investment in Brazil one week and an investment in a California almond farm the next,” he said.

Riewerts has had a significant impact in his workplace. He has traveled to half-a-dozen countries to learn about their agricultural systems, and has helped build his company’s agriculture farmland portfolio to more than $2.5 billion.

“My degree from U of I provided me with a unique knowledge base that could be applied universally across the business world, or specifically to the agricultural industry,” he said. “As my professors in ACE told me, it’s easier to put an ag guy on Wall Street than to put a Wall Street guy on a farm.”

Riewerts said his agriculture background [he was raised on a farm in northwestern Illinois] gave him the work ethic and determination he needed to advance in his career. The U of I provided him with a well-rounded education and skill set that he has been able to apply in all aspects of his job, from financial modeling to his understanding of global economics.

“My professors in ACE were easily accessible,” said Riewerts, “and the smaller class sizes, especially for my advanced classes, were beneficial.”

Riewerts said he would recommend his profession because, “The agriculture industry is among the largest in the world. With the increasing population and rising demand for food, agriculture investments is a unique space looking to provide capital investment to farmers around the world. There are a limited number of groups and individuals with professional agriculture experience to help them.”

Riewerts concluded, “It’s difficult to know what you want to do with the rest of your life, as a high school senior, but the College of ACES provides so many opportunities for career paths, it makes it easier to find a concentration you will love."
