There were many options that fell in my area of interest, but I specifically chose a major in ACES because I hear nothing but good things about its resources and student support.

Isalia Ramirez, a junior in agricultural and consumer economics, said the College of ACES appealed to her during her search for a major that would grant her direct involvement in the progress of communities.

“After I did an internship at Provena Covenant Medical Center in their community benefit department, I realized I really enjoyed working in the community,” she said. “There were many options that fell in my area of interest, but I specifically chose a major in ACES because I hear nothing but good things about its resources and student support.”

Isalia said she appreciates the College of ACES’ commitment to applied learning that provides useful information for the real world.

Isalia has continued to learn applied lessons outside the classroom through organizations such as M.E.Ch.A (Movimiento Estudiantil Chican@ de Aztlan), a student organization working towards social justice of underrepresented communities by promoting higher education, political empowerment, and cultural growth.

Isalia says students looking for a college should not limit their options.

“When I was a senior in high school, never in a million years was I going to apply to U of I because I thought it was a school in the middle of nowhere with nothing to offer,” she said. “I wanted a small school in the city so I never visited or even looked into the smallest information about U of I. It was only by chance that I experienced U of I, and now that I am here, I absolutely love it.”
