Profile: Kevin McMillin

Alumni
Foreign Exchange Products Business Analyst, CME Group

Kevin McMillin enjoys the excitement of the trading industry. New and significant regulatory changes are shaping the future of the financial arena and have the potential to create a multitude of opportunities for CME Group’s foreign exchange products. Kevin’s natural abilities to be personable, articulate, enthusiastic, and energetic have enabled him to reach many of his professional goals while working for the exchange.

“In today’s business world, it is extremely important to have strong communication skills and work well with different types of people, especially if you are in a client-facing role,” he says.

While attending the University of Illinois, Kevin took advantage of the opportunities available at a big school with a diverse student population. Wanting the full experience of a large Big Ten university, he got involved with multiple student organizations that were not associated with his educational focus or social groups. These experiences helped Kevin prepare for his current job.

“The ability to meet and converse with new people in unfamiliar situations prepared me for job interviews, client interaction, and professional networking events,” Kevin says. “Being able to masterfully navigate and participate in these situations is a key to success in the business world."

During college, Kevin was a Peer Educator at the Financial Wellness Center, providing one-on-one financial management guidance to college students and presenting financial planning strategies to campus staff, student clubs, and organizations.  He also took part in ACE 436, a semester course that culminated in an intensive two-week immersion experience in China.

“I found my educational experience at the U of I to be very enjoyable,” Kevin says. “My off-campus experiences, such as field trips and international study abroad trips, were just as valuable as my time spent in the classroom. I received a phenomenal education in the College of ACES and built exceptional relationships with my professors, many of whom I remain in contact with today."
