Achieving the honor of a Jonathan Baldwin Turner (JBT) Scholarship gave Madelyn Walters of Hebron the confidence she needed to get a successful start at the University of Illinois.
“My JBT scholarship has helped me fund my education by decreasing my annual tuition, which is a huge factor with college tuitions increasing everywhere,” she said.

When choosing a college, Walters recommends making a list of things you want from a college experience.
“I knew that I wanted to go to a big school with a good program that’s not too far or too close to home,” she said. “This made it easier to pick which schools to visit and consider when making my decision.”

Walters heard about the JBT scholarship program while meeting with a U of I professor during her campus visit.
“Don’t get too worked up about the JBT interview process,” she encouraged. “I was really nervous, but once I got in there and began talking with the interviewers, I quickly became at ease. They simply want to learn more about you and answer your questions about U of I.”

Today, in addition to her coursework, Walters keeps herself busy on campus through her involvement in the ACE Club, Hoof ‘N Horn Club and the Sigma Alpha Professional Agricultural Sorority.

“My education at U of I is preparing me for a successful future,” she said. “A U of I degree will definitely help me find a good job, especially when paired with the professional skills I am developing along the way.”
