The extensive resources, high quality educators, and support from the local community set U of I apart from other academic institutions.

Profile: Ross Hager

Alumni
Financial Executive, Busey Investment Services

As a financial executive, Ross Hager enjoys developing financial plans and account reviews while building relationships and making a difference in his clients’ lives.

“Professionalism, empathy, and ambition are some of the characteristics that have helped me excel in my profession,” Ross says. “Completing tasks in a timely matter, presenting myself politely but confidently, showing compassion when dealing with clients, having an entrepreneurial spirit, being proactive in continuing education since my field is constantly changing—these are just a few examples of how I do so.”

Positive attributes like these, along with experiences Ross had at the University of Illinois, were instrumental in helping him prepare for his career. Influential extracurricular activities, events, and people included the Financial Planning Club, professors in financial planning, and financial planning career fairs. While still a student, Ross met potential employers to learn about the industry and available opportunities, studied financial cases, and helped other students learn about the professional setting for financial planning.

“Through these experiences I was able to find what I was truly passionate about. They helped me determine the type of a career I wanted to pursue in financial planning,” Ross says. “I enjoyed networking with students, professors, and other industry professionals, and I still stay in touch with many of them.”

Ross was very involved in other ways at the U of I, such as being a financial wellness intern with U of I Extension. He worked on educational outreach programs, advertised them on social media networks, and offered individual peer education to students on budgeting, credit and debit, and credit reports. He also interned with Busey Investment Services, helping financial advisors prepare for client reviews, working with financial planning software, participating in meetings with prospective and current clients, and learning the firm’s daily operations.

“The extensive resources, high quality educators, and support from the local community set U of I apart from other academic institutions,” Ross says. “The financial planning professors brought real-life experiences to the classroom and were always willing to help each individual student succeed. The resources available to students help them reach their academic and future professional goals. Whether through classes, career fairs, clubs, or internships, students have the opportunity to learn, mature, and grow professionally in this program.”
