Vice President, Ag Services Department, Hickory Point Bank

“The most enjoyable aspect of my job is the variety it entails from day to day,” says Seth Baker, an agricultural and consumer economics graduate. “Knowing that I can use my experience and expertise to assist absentee landowners is rewarding.”

As vice president of the Ag Services Department of Hickory Point Bank, Seth is very busy as an accredited farm manager, a state certified general appraiser, and an Illinois farmland broker.  The firsthand knowledge of agriculture he gained growing up on a farm has allowed him to excel.

“When most people think of agriculture, they tend to think more of the production, agronomy, or livestock sides of the industry,” Seth says. “My job entails the economic and business sides of the industry, allowing me to focus on what I enjoy best.”

Seth’s experiences at the University of Illinois helped him build a network of valuable contacts, even before he entered the workplace. While in school, he was a member of the Agriculture Business Club, Illini Pride’s Orange Krush, and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

“No matter where this job takes me, there are other U of I alumni that I have already met in person or have an instant connection with through the Illini experience,” Seth says.

“What sets U of I apart from other academic institutions is its worldwide status as a leader in several fields, including agriculture. The wide range of backgrounds, even within the College of ACES, is unparalleled, and the university is unique in being located near major metropolitan areas—Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis—while being surrounded by the world’s most productive farmland.”
