Profile: Sondra Monier

Undergraduate Student

Sondra Monier’s decision to pursue an agricultural and consumer economics (ACE) major was influenced by her farm upbringing and her desire to help consumers in the agriculture industry. After completing several internships, she selected a concentration in finance in agribusiness because she wanted to work for an agricultural lender in the future.

“The ACE major brought together my passion for the agriculture industry and my interest in the financial sector,” Sondra says. “The program is very flexible, so I could take courses in other areas I am interested in, such as crop sciences. The faculty members in the department truly get to know you; you’re not just another face in the lecture hall.”

Sondra says her U of I experience has prepared her in all aspects for her future career. She says she’s found her greatest rewards and achievements through undertaking strenuous tasks outside of her comfort zone. Sondra’s involvements with College of ACES Student Council and Student Advancement Committee, Field and Furrow Club, Collegiate Farm Bureau, Illini Dance Marathon, and 4-H House cooperative sorority have stretched her skills.

“The opportunities provided to students along with the excellent faculty and staff set U of I apart from other academic institutions,” Sondra says. “With over 1,100 student organizations on campus, it is extremely hard not to get involved. Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone, because those opportunities are what build you into a better person to benefit you in the future.”
