Profile: Talia Avci

When Talia Avci of Darien began looking for colleges, she stepped onto the University of Illinois campus and instantly felt at home. The opportunity to become a Jonathan Baldwin Turner (JBT) Scholar sealed the deal.

“It’s a great honor to be named a JBT Scholar,” Avci said. “It also keeps me on my toes now that I’m here on campus. I feel privileged to represent the College of ACES in this way and am grateful to have the duty to uphold this award by maintaining a 3.4 GPA.”

Avci said without the JBT Scholarship, she wouldn’t be able to afford to participate in other extracurricular Activities in ACES.

“I’m starting to take on leadership positions in extracurricular clubs such as Sustainability Chair in Delta Gamma,” she said. “I’m also a part of Students for Environmental Concerns.”

Her advice for students interested in the JBT Scholarship Program is simple: “Put a lot of thought into your answers and thoroughly describe your high school achievements.”

“My favorite part was the interview – just be yourself and be confident.”
