Get Involved!

ACE students discussing policy.

My name is Charles Mayfield, and I am a junior in Agricultural and Consumer Economics concentrating in Farm Management. After being on campus for the past three years, one thing that I cannot stress enough is being active on campus. Getting involved is an important aspect of building yourself as an individual and as a candidate for your future employers. Within the College of ACES and University-wide, there are several different clubs and organizations available to students to take part in. Just in the Department of ACE, I am an ACE Ambassador and also hold a leadership position in ACE Club.

Getting involved not only creates leadership attributes but also formulates a network that will be used throughout college and life. Making connections will serve you well in the long run whether those are through students, club advisors, or industry leaders. When seeking work or in a profession setting, it always pays off knowing common people. They can aid in seeking internships or full-time positions. In ACE, there is a tight-knit community that looks out for one another. It is beneficial to get to know others while at Illinois for the short time being. This is one of the perks of participating in clubs across campus.

I strongly encourage students to diversify themselves in the organizations they chose. Get involved in the College of ACES and at the University and make connections with the classmates and faculty. The opportunities here at the University of Illinois truly are endless. EmbrACE all that there is to offer in the Department of ACE.
