Oh the Places You’ll Go with ACES

Emily Bloemer

Dr. Seuss defined the College of ACES when he mused, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

My name is Emily Bloemer, and I am currently a sophomore studying the ACE concentration of Agri-Accounting. Agriculture, and more importantly the ACE department in the College of ACES, has provided me with the chance to steer myself in the direction of success. It is truly amazing what opportunities emails from College of ACES faculty/staff hold in store for students, from studying abroad to scholarships to leadership positions. As a freshman, I felt unsure what direction to steer myself in the summer- there weren’t many internship opportunities for an accounting-major underclassman. Thankfully, an email from ACE Academic Advisor Jessa Barnard that caught my eye contained information about a new summer job shadow program the ACE department was implementing. With the ACE-ING Job Shadow Program, I was able to rank various companies based on my interests and career goals, and then get matched with those companies. I had the wonderful opportunity of job shadowing with GROWMARK at their corporate office for two days and then traveling to Effingham to visit TGM. Through this experience, I had the ability to ask one-on-one questions, build connections, and discover if an agriculture company like GROWMARK would be the right fit for me. I can say without a doubt that ACE students should take the time  to read and ask questions about any emails from the College of ACES, and especially the ACE department. Who knows what wonderful things could be in store for you! After all, Dr. Seuss sums it up perfectly when he proclaimed, “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… get on your way!”
