Bunge and Metro

ACE students discussing policy.

Today we began our day a little bit different; we were able to sleep in until 8 a.m. After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel we left around 9 a.m. to go walk around the French Concession district of Shanghai. This district was previously occupied by the French and its buildings display the French and Chinese architecture and design. Students were able to walk around and enjoy the local shops and parks.

From there we walked over to Bunge for our presentation. Our first presenter, Michael Goettl, gave us an overview of the company. He was able to go through his presentation very quickly since we already visited Bunge in St. Louis this past semester. We were then able to ask lots of questions. He gave us great detail on Bunge in China and his career with the company. All of the students found it fascinating to hear about his life and how he came about with such a great international experience. While he gave his presentation we all were able to enjoy fresh fruits, pastries, and a variety of drinks. After Mr. Goettl's presentation, Cynthia Su gave an overview on the history of Bunge in China.

After the presentations we headed downstairs where we ate at Subway. It has been a while since we have all enjoyed some American food!

After our quick lunch, we were off to Metro Cash and Carry. Metro Cash and Carry would be the equivalent to a Sam's Club or Costco from the US. Their main goal was to sell to only businesses such as resturants and factory canteens. Mihai Bogdan and Bai Yao gave us a wonderful tour of the 30,000 square feet store. We also were able to taste jack fruit, a yellow pitted fruit, which tasted delicious. Metro Cash and Carry houses a large number of products in their store and dedicates 75 percent of their shelf space to food products. We were allowed to buy products from the store and many of us chose snacks from our childhood like chocolate poky sticks.

Departing from METRO our bus driver and tour guide leader kindly dropped a majority of us off at the Shanghai World Expo with the rest of the group choosing instead to visit beautiful Yu Yuan gardens and do some shopping at the Bazaar.  Everyone who attended the Expo was highly impressed with the amazing architecture and technology on display from countries all around the world.  Crowds of visitors left each group a limited amount to do and see, except for MeilingÕs group. Because of an injured knee she go to use a wheelchair her group was allowed to use the faster track lanes allowing for their group to travel through more pavilions.  This situation reminded us all to look at the glass half full instead of half empty.  Also, when group members were M.I.A., we used the Marco-Polo like chant of I-L-L to rejoin with the I-N-IÕs.  Upon collectively meeting back together we watched a sound, light, and water show on the river (which was completely beautiful), grabbed some dinner, made our final rounds to capture a few more pictures, then returned to the hotel.  Recounting our adventures from the evening, we found out that the shopping adventure of the rest of our group went well with some thrifty bargaining and cultural learning.  Off to bed we went, since we had an early rise the next morning.
