The Importance of the Advisor

ACE students discussing policy.

Aside from all the wonderful opportunities the Department of ACE has to offer, I think one of the most important assets it possesses is its advisors and guidance. Here in the Department of ACE you have the opportunity to maintain a closer relationship with your advisors. Many times students come to larger universities with the fright of being “just a number.” As an ACE student this is not the case. Our advisors work one on one with each and every student to guide them and help them pick the best classes for their specific goals. Each advisor takes the time to understand each student’s concern and to find a solution. They go above and beyond to make sure that you leave their office knowing all the information you need. If you have a question that they cannot answer, they will contact someone who knows.

When I was first admitted into the ACE Department I had many concerns and I wasn’t entirely sure which concentration to purse. After I sat down with my advisor, I had a much better understanding of what concentration was right for me and which classes I would need to take to pursue this concentration. She was also able to help me incorporate my Spanish minor courses, and even directed me exactly how to apply into the Business minor. Every semester before registration I go back to speak with her, and she helps me pick the classes necessary to graduate on time and to fulfill my degree obligations.

I heavily rely on my advisor whenever I have problems, questions, or any concerns regarding my education. There was never a time that I still felt lost or confused after speaking with my councilor. At a school this big it is very easy to feel “like just a number” but the advisors at the Department of ACE make you feel a lot more comfortable and familiar at a university so large.
