ACE in the World

We started our day by visiting CoBank, a cooperative that is owned by over 24,000 farmers in the U.S., which works to provide credit and other financial services to farmers around the country. There Leili Ghazi, the president of the western region of CoBank, and Brett Lauppe, the western regions relations manager, explained to us how CoBank functions as well as some of the big issues that impact their company and agriculture in California.

This morning was led by Eric Tamichi. We were also lucky enough to hear the President and CEO of Valent, Michael Donaldson, as well as several other speakers discuss not only what Valent brings to the market but also all of the policy and issues dealing with the market as a whole.

The first stop of the day on March 21st was to the JS West Family Farm Eggs. We met with Tim Silva along with three other employees who gave us a tour of the chicken facility. They explained the transitions currently facing the egg industry.

The topics we've covered include agriculture diversity of California and some of its history, the challenges that it faces out there, and even a number of in-person and online guest presentations. Every guest felt more exciting than the last with people such as Karen Ross, the secretary of the California Department of Agricultural, and Dan Dooley, a principal at New Current Water and Land in Sacremento.

On Friday, we had our last two company visits for the entire trip: the Brazilian National Development Bank (BNDES) and Petrobras. Our day began bright and early with a quick breakfast before we left for the Development Bank in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

After our short flight to Rio de Janeiro, we were welcomed by a breathtaking overview of the whole city including the soccer stadium, Olympic arenas, Christ the Redeemer statue, Sugarloaf Mountain, and other landmarks visible in the clear blue sky.

Around 7:30, we departed Toledo City and set our sails for the Coodetec research facility in Cascavel. At this particular facility, they breed for new crop varieties and test crop protection products. We were warmly greeted by several members of the Coodetec staff and informed on their business model and products.
