Fellowships and grants

  • MS student Marshaun Montgomery was awarded a U.S. Borlaug Fellowship in Global Food Security for his research to reduce draught risk in Africa.
  • MS student Seth Morgan was awarded a U.S. Borlaug Fellowship in Global Food Security in order to carry out his research in Kenya with the World Agroforestry Centre.
  • MS student Brad Coyle won a Boren Fellowship and a Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship for studies in South Korea.
  • PhD student Akito Kamei was awarded a Nepal Policy Communication Fellowship from the University of Michigan to write policy briefs on the Chitwan Valley project in Nepal.
  • PhD student Mateus Nogueira Meirelles de Souza was chosen as a Levenick Scholar to study adoption of energy efficient technology.
  • MS student Sean Hennessy won a Small Project Grant from the UIUC Student Sustainability Committee.

Awards

  • PhD student Xian Fang Bak was awarded the Tiebout Prize for best graduate student paper by the Western Regional Science Association.
  • PhD student Renato Schwambach Vieira was Poster Session winner at the Population Association of America (PAA) 2016 for "Expanding Affirmative Action in Brazil: Effects on Student Performance" (with Mary Arends-Kuenning)
  • ACE graduate students organized and hosted the 9th AERUS Summit conference at UIUC, with many also giving presentations http://www.aerus.illinois.edu/

  • MS student Anna Fairbairn was awarded a prestigious U.S. Borlaug Fellowship in Global Food Security for her research in Tanzania studying the implications of mineral fertilizer quality on small farmers and markets.
  • PhD student Kashi Kafle won the Elmer Broadbent Award for research in livestock marketing.
  • PhD student Minhong Xu was a finalist for the student-led paper competition at the annual meetings of the North American Regional Science Council.
  • PhD student Renato Schwambach Vieira was chosen for the Lemann Graduate Fellowship.
