Get Involved Early

ACE students discussing policy.

Coming to the University of Illinois from my small town of 1,700 people was an adjustment. I knew right away I would fit in here when I became a part of the ACES Family. The close, tight-knit feel of the college reminded me of home. I found my niche in the ACE Department, and I have enjoyed getting involved in various ACE and ACES organizations during my time here. As I begin the second semester of my junior year, I reflect on the past years and my involvement in student organizations.

One regret I have about college is not getting involved sooner. I wish I had jumped head-first into many of the activities I am now involved in and ran for leadership positions earlier in my college career. Whether it is pursuing a Leadership Certificate, running for an office in the organization you are involved in, or even applying to be an ACE Ambassador; I recommend jumping right in and going after these opportunities early. Keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities as well. I know for me, it took trying a variety of activities before I finally found what was right for me. So jump right in, try new things, and don’t be afraid to run for the leadership position you are thinking about. The opportunities are endless here in ACE!
